“Sayurala” attends MILAN-2022 naval exercise in India

Sri Lanka Navy Ship (SLNS) “Sayurala” took part at the MILAN-2022 multilateral naval exercise hosted by the Indian Navy recently. According to Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) media, the 11th addition of MILAN was held at the Visakhapatnam Port and in the eastern seas of India from 25th February to 04th March.

A number of navies and maritime partners from many regional and extra-regional countries had taken part in this exercise themed ‘Camaraderie Cohesion Collaboration’, it says.

The exercise was held in two phases. The Harbour Phase was conducted at the Visakhapatnam Port from 25th to 28th February while the Sea Phase was held from 01st to 04th March in the eastern seas of India, it says.

It also says during the exercise, representing the SLN Commander Southern Naval Area, Rear Admiral Sajith Gamage and Commanding Officer “Sayurala”, Captain Jayantha Bandara called on Chief of Naval Staff of India, Admiral R Hari Kumar. The Indian Navy Chief had accorded them a warm welcome and exchanged views on matters of bilateral importance.

A main feature of the Harbour Phase was the MILAN-2022 International Maritime Seminar. The crew of “Sayurala” had participated in the International City Parade, which showcased the cultural diversity of the representing countries, and also ran a stall exhibiting local cuisine. The Navy band and cultural troupe also made their performances on these occasions, SLN media states.

The Sea Phase saw 26 ships, 21 aircraft and one submarine taking part in maneuvers that included advanced and complex exercises in all three dimensions of maritime operations and aimed at enhancing interoperability, maritime cooperation and share best practices amongst participating navies, weapon firings, advanced anti-submarine warfare exercises, cross deck helicopter landings, simulation of complex operational scenarios and tactical maneuvers, it says.

Meanwhile, “Sayurala” is slated to attend 'SLINEX’ bilateral naval exercise between the Sri Lanka and Indian Navy soon after the conclusion of MILAN-2022. The annually held 'SLINEX ' is scheduled to commence today (Mar 07) and conclude on the 07th (March 2022), it further says.
