Met. Dept. forecasts rainy weather to continue

The prevailing rainy weather condition experienced in many parts of the country is likely to continue. According to the latest weather forecast issued by the Met. Department at noon today (Apr 22), the prevailing showery conditions will enhance over the island.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at most parts of the island during the afternoon or night while showers are likely to occur in the Western and Southern provinces during the morning as well, it says.

Heavy showers above 100 mm may occur at some places in Central, Sabaragamuwa, Uva and North-Central provinces and rains above 50 mm may be expected at several other places.

Showers or thundershowers will occur at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Colombo and Galle.

Winds will be South-westerly and with speeds reaching between 20-30 kmph which can increase up to 35-40 kmph at times in sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Hambantota. The sea areas off the coast extending from Matara to Hambantota will be fairly rough, it further says.

People are advised to take precautions to minimize damages caused by temporary localized strong winds and lightning during thundershowers.
