May 24, 2022

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) nabbed 67 persons last evening (23), in an attempt to unlawfully migrate to an overseas country via sea.

A special raid conducted by the SLN in Sallisampaltivu and the seas off Trincomalee foiled the illegal migration racket, the SLN said.

Sri Lanka Navy in coordination with the Nilaveli Police nabbed 12 male suspects initially and following their information, another 55 suspects were nabbed in the seas of Trincomalee in the same evening.

Two three wheelers, two vehicles and a local multi day fishing trawler used for the nefarious act were also seized during the operation, the SLN further said.

The suspects who are the residents of Jaffna, Trincomalee, Batticaloa, Puttalam, Ampara, Ratnapura, Gampaha and Colombo will be handed over to the respective Police stations in Trincomalee along with their belongings and vehicles for onward legal proceedings.

Further, the SLN urges the public to refrain from risking their lives and property embarking on perilous sea voyages, being caught in the rackets of such smugglers.
