Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) had taken into custody 543 kgs of Kerala cannabis on Sunday (19 June). According to SLN media sources, this haul of Kerala cannabis was found during a foot patrol in Periyapadu beach in Udappuwa in the early hours.

Navy personnel attached to SLNS Thambapanni in the Northwestern Naval Command during a foot patrol in Periyapadu beach on Sunday morning managed to find the haul of cannabis in 173 packages washed ashore, it says.

The Navy believes that the cannabis had been abandoned by smugglers without being able to bring them ashore due to the continuous presence of naval patrols in the area. It is also believed that the gross street value of the Kerala cannabis is close to Rs. 120 million, it further says.

Naval authorities have handed over the Kerala cannabis to Police in Udappuwa for further legal action, it adds.
