SLCG looks forward to further enhance oil spill response capabilities

A Japanese delegation comprising of Japan Coast Guard (JCG) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) led by Mr Koji Tsuchiya, Senior Advisor JICA arrived at the Sri Lanka Coast Guard (SLCG) Headquarters in Mirissa and discussed on avenues to further enhance the oil spill response capabilities in SLCG, with its Director General Rear Admiral Anura Ekanayake, recently.

Rear Admiral Ekanayake had also appreciated the tremendous training assistance provided by Japan especially on oil spill management which has given a remarkable improvement to the capacity building of the SLCG.

The SLCG said, JCG and JICA have commenced an advisory service for improving oil spill response capabilities of SLCG under the project themed, “Institutionalization support to establish an in-house Advanced Oil Spill Incident Management training program at Sri Lanka Coast Guard for disaster mitigation and marine environment protection from 2022 to 2025” in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding which was signed in February this year.

Accordingly, a Joint Coordinating Committee (JCC) meeting was held between two parties in order to discuss the progress of the project, the SLCG further said.

The delegation also visited the oil spill storage facilities at the Coast Guard Southern Region, SLCG Ship Samudraraksha, Advanced Training Centre in Kirinda and SLCG Ship Samaraksha including the oil spill equipment storing yard in Dikovita prior to their departure, the SLCG added.
