Colonel Nalin Herath speaks at South Asian Think Tanks Forum in Nepal

Director of Media and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Defence and Overlooking Director General of the Institute of National Security Studies (INSS) Colonel Nalin Herath delivered a lecture at a conference organised jointly by Konrad Adenauer Stiftung and the Consortium of South Asian Think Tanks (COSATT) in Kathmandu, Nepal on November 07.

COSATT is a grouping of leading Think Tanks in South Asia, which meet to research and study on significant topics and issues concerning the region. COSATT has been working to bring together think tanks and research organisations to forge closer ties to promote regional cooperation and build peace in the region.

Speaking to a distinguished gathering on “Two Years after the Pandemic - A World In Crisis”, Colonel Herath said that the world is facing challenges like war, unemployment, supply chain disruption, and the threats of Artificial Intelligence, among others whilst stating that it is estimated that around 300 million jobs will be lost due to Artificial Intelligence.

He spoke on the theme, which has a contemporary value, widening the academic horizons of the participants on the prevailing world disorder while discussing its impact on South Asian countries.

Experts from various South Asian countries deliberated on ways to navigate through the various challenges that the world is currently facing with two major wars between Russia and Ukraine as well as Israel and the Palestinian militant group, Hamas.

He further added that the crisis in the Middle East, Quad, China’s BRI, Indo-Pacific, Taiwan, Russia-Ukraine war, and the climate crisis are inviting geopolitical tensions.

A galaxy of eminent scholars including Major General Dipankar Banerjee from India, Mallika Joseph, a senior fellow at Women in Security, Conflict Management and Peace, Avadesh Mathur of India Foundation, Shambhu Ram Simkhada, a former Ambassador of Nepal to Switzerland, Geeta Madhavan of India also shared their views during the conference.
