Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), visited the Dikkowita Fisheries Harbour today (May 28) to inspect the massive consignment of illicit drugs intercepted by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) during a high-seas operation.
In a joint maritime operation, the SLN successfully apprehended two local fishing trawlers attempting to smuggle a large quantity of methamphetamine (Ice) and heroin. A total of 11 suspects were arrested during the operation and brought ashore along with the vessels and the seized narcotics.
Vice Admiral Kanchana Banagoda, Commander of the Navy, received the Deputy Minister at the harbour and briefed him on the details of the mission. The operation was executed in close coordination with the State Intelligence Service, the Police Narcotic Bureau (PNB), and Regional Coordination Operation Centres.
Addressing the media, Deputy Minister Jayasekara commended the Sri Lanka Navy, intelligence agencies, and law enforcement authorities for their relentless efforts in combating narcotics trafficking. “This operation reflects the strength of coordinated efforts between our security forces and intelligence agencies, both local and international. We are committed to eradicating drug trafficking and building a drug-free society,” he stated.
He further emphasised that stringent legal action will be taken against all individuals involved in the smuggling network.
The Acting Inspector General of Police and several senior Navy officers were also present at the occasion.
