Celebrating Yoga for One Earth, One Health
June 21, 2025The 11th International Day of Yoga (IDY) was commemorated in a vibrant gathering at Independence Square, Colombo, today (June 21), with the presence of the Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd), as a special invitee. The event was organized by the High Commission of India in Colombo.
Since its proclamation by the United Nations in 2014, June 21 has been globally recognized as International Yoga Day. This year's celebration carried the powerful theme, "Yoga for One Earth, One Health," underscoring the profound connection between individual well-being and the health of our planet.
The morning event commenced with the arrival of dignitaries and participants, followed by prayers conducted by Most Ven. Mahasangha, Dr. Wimalsara Maha Thera and his disciples. A video presentation recapping ten years of IDY in Sri Lanka set the tone for the proceedings.
The core of the programme featured a guided yoga session, including standing and seated asanas, pranayama and meditation, offering participants a moment of unity, balance and introspection. The session beautifully demonstrated yoga’s universal appeal, bridging ages, backgrounds and cultures.
His Excellency Santosh Jha, High Commissioner of India, graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. He, along with Deputy Minister Major General Jayasekara (Retd), participated in the felicitation ceremony, presenting certificates to yoga institutes and receiving mementoes in appreciation of their presence.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks and light refreshments, leaving attendees rejuvenated and inspired by yoga’s timeless message of harmony and holistic health.
