Japan Provides Humanitarian Assistance to Support Sri Lanka's
Disaster Relief Effort

A consignment of humanitarian aid from Japan was officially handed over to Sri Lanka today (04 December) at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA), providing crucial support to ongoing relief efforts following the severe adverse weather caused national disaster.

The donation was formally presented by H.E. Akio ISOMATA, Ambassador of Japan to Sri Lanka, together with Kenji Kuronuma, Chief Representative of JICA Sri Lanka, to Hon. Deputy Minister of Defence, Major General Aruna Jayasekara (Retd.), during an official handover ceremony held at BIA.

During the proceedings, H.E. Akio ISOMATA reaffirmed the strong bilateral partnership between Japan and Sri Lanka, stating that Japan remains committed to standing with Sri Lanka, especially during challenging times. He emphasized that this humanitarian contribution reflects the longstanding friendship, mutual respect, and cooperation shared between the two nations.

Accepting the donation, Deputy Minister of Defence Aruna Jayasekara expressed deep gratitude to the Government of Japan, JICA, and the people of Japan for their timely assistance. He reiterated the enduring bond between Japan and Sri Lanka and acknowledged Japan’s consistent support during critical humanitarian situations.

Also in attendance were Major General (Retd.) Sampath Kotuwegoda, Director General of the Disaster Management Centre (DMC), along with senior officials and representatives from the Embassy of Japan, JICA, Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka Air Force, and Bandaranaike International Airport.

This consignment marks another significant gesture of goodwill from Japan, further strengthening cooperation in disaster relief, humanitarian support, and bilateral relations between the two countries.
