Navy promotes water sports in Northern Province

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) conducted a ‘Dragon Boat Championship’ at the Karainagar Channel recently (July 04). The sporting event was held with a view of enhancing civil-military relationship through sports in the region and boost awareness on water sports and lifesaving techniques among the communities.

Amongst eight regional schools taking part at the ‘Inter-School Championship’, Viyavil Saiva Vidyalaya won the Championship while Yarlton College was the Runners Up, the SLN said.

Navy’s Fleet won the title contesting in the ‘Inter-Ship Championship’ while Sri Lanka Navy Ship Kanchadewa secured the Runners Up position.

SLN together with the Canoeing Federation, Life Saving Association, other sports Associations and cvil society organizations in the Northern province conducted the event successfully following the directives of Navy Commander Vice Admiral Nishantha Ulugetenne.

SLN’s Deputy Chief of Staff and Commander Northern Naval Area Rear Admiral Priyantha Perera had organized the impressive water sports event.

Jaffna schools and Navy teams including the Fleet competed in the events held under Inter-School and Inter-Ships Championship respectively.

The SLN further said officials of the Provincial Ministry of Education, respective School Principals and teachers and local residents attended in their numbers to witness the event.
